Buddy is a sweet, naive elf who quickly teaches everyone else lots of valuable lessons in “Elf the Musical” now performing at Paramount Theatre in downtown Aurora.

Director Amber Mak says in her director’s notes, “It certainly feels like the world could use a bit more of Buddy the Elf’s perspective.”

Buddy, played by Kyle Adams, does a nice job with the wide-eyed role. The audience gets to marvel at some of the grand sights and experiences as well.

“Elf” gifts lots of “wow” moments to all ages.

The set is one of Paramount’s best with images projected on a blank, city skyline. Some other touches *no spoilers* add lots of awe.

“Elf” has lots of stage candy, as I like to say. Lots of popping color, fabulous costumes, stellar hairdos, and fun routines.

The performances were all endearing. I especially enjoyed Emily Agy in the role of Deb, and Lara Filip was pretty perfect as Emily (her voice!). Oliver Boomer was outstanding as Michael.

I never saw the film “Elf,” but the musical is most definitely a feel-good holiday musical for the whole family. It’s even better when seen through the eyes of a child. I enjoyed looking over at my seven-year-old son as he smiled and laughed.

My son also pointed out that “Elf” has some sad parts, and he wondered why the audience doesn’t “boo” when things aren’t looking up for Buddy.

“Everyone just claps,” he said.

There was lots of clapping. Buddy manages to get the holiday spirit pouring out of all of us.

“Elf The Musical” runs through January 7, 2018. For tickets, visit ParamountAurora.com or call (630) 896-6666.
