The Peace House welcomes neighbors of all ages to stay awhile
Downtown Auroran Magazine asked Rev. Gavin about the Peace House, located at 301 Fifth St. on Aurora’s East Side next to St. John United Church of Christ.
The Peace House was purchased end of June 2016. We started holding meetings and classes in it by the fall of 2016. St. John United Church of Christ owns the property again. Our goal is to collaboratively plan programming with community members that will serve the children and families and build peace, the practice of nonviolence, and train peace makers. We seek to discover, uncover and recover abundance in the neighborhood. The house, built in 1900, as the parsonage of the church was sold in March 2006 and was owned by two different families over the 10 years it did not belong to the church. An anonymous donor provided the funds so the house could be purchased by the church and used for the community good. The Peace House does not have regular hours. It is open for kids’ yoga classes, SoulCollage® classes, Tapping for Stress, drum circles, Hope Takes Action anti-poverty classes, climate justice education and many other peace building activities. We are putting together a fall schedule of programming now.
The Peace House is an intergenerational, community-driven welcoming space, whose mission is to collaboratively create abundant community. We offer free programming: such as yoga, meditation, mentoring, SoulCollage®, Tapping EFT, and other services to meet expressed needs in Aurora.
The United Church of Christ motto is ” no matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.” All are welcome at St. John UCC and the church’s Peace House. Peace, love, hope, kindness, acceptance, and encouraging reminders that we are all precious and created in the image of God. All programming is based on that. (Programming includes yoga classes for children, drum circles, and discussion.)
